Freeland Published in The Diabetes Educator

Dr. Barbara FreelandAn article by Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Barbara Freeland was published in the May/June 2011 issue of The Diabetes Educator. The article, entitled, “Nursing Practice Patterns: Timing of Insulin Administration and Glucose Monitoring in the Hospital,” describes the methods and results of a study recently conducted by Dr. Freeland to assess how frequently nurses meet the expected standards of care for diabetes nursing practices.

The article discusses how the increased use of insulin infusions and rapid-acting insulin over regular insulin is making diabetes nursing care more intensive. For this reason, the coordination of insulin administration, glucose monitoring, and meal delivery presents a more significant challenge to nurses than ever before. Dr. Freeland’s study concludes that standards regarding the timing of these activities should be evaluated.

“Nursing care of people with diabetes is becoming increasingly complex and time-consuming,” she writes in the article. “It is time to reexamine the roles of all staff to find innovative ways to work together to best improve patient outcomes.”
