Since October 2011, Angela Kerner, Graduate Recruiting and Admissions Lead in the School of Nursing's Office of Student, Academic & Multicultural Services, has served on the National NursingCAS Advisory Board, where she provides valuable input on the continued development of the application service. NursingCAS, the nation’s only centralized application service for students applying to baccalaureate and masters programs in Nursing, was launched last year under the direction of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and is currently used by over 100 nursing schools in 36 states, including the U-M School of Nursing.
Kerner joins sixteen other advisory group members associated with nursing programs from around the country. “The purpose of the NursingCAS Advisory Board is to share perspectives and opinions on issues related to NursingCAS to work through process improvements to offer the best service possible,” said Kerner. Thanks to the input and innovation of the Advisory Board, several new features have been added to the service since its launch in March 2010 in order to address requests and issues raised by participating schools.
By standardizing the entry process into nursing programs for undergraduate and graduate programs, NursingCAS is benefitting schools in a variety of ways. Said Dean Kathleen Potempa, President of AACN, in a press release, “Nursing schools, even those inundated by applications, appreciate having real‐time access to pre‐screened, verified applicant data while reaching a diverse student applicant pool, which is essential to meeting annual recruitment goals.”
In addition, NursingCAS reduces the burden placed on students when applying to multiple schools by eliminating the need for duplicate admissions materials. Because the efficiency of the service helps school maximize enrollment in nursing programs, NursingCAS is an important mechanism for addressing the national shortage of nurses.
