May Headlines: UMSN Stepping Up, Online and Worldwide
Faculty funding and accolades, the first dual midwife-nurse practitioner graduates, and clinical research management training.
Associate Professor Janis Miller, Ph.D., RN, APRN, FAAN, received a University of Michigan Global Challenges for a Third Century (GCTC) Phase 1 grant for her project “Transforming Violence and Conflict into Hope and Innovation: Establishing a Center of Excellence for Training and Research in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo.” Dr. Miller and colleagues will develop training programs to spread knowledge gained through Panzi Hospital’s experiences in a post-conflict environment. The team plans to generate curriculum to reflect these experiences to be used in other settings, evaluate outcomes of ongoing and new projects, and run an administrative center for research proposals from around the world. The project aims to develop models for successful international collaborations.
Clinical Assistant Professor Michelle Aebersold Ph.D., RN, has been elected to the International Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Board of Directors in the Bylaws Chair position. “As Bylaws Chair of INACSL, I will work to ensure the bylaws support the mission of INACSL which is to promote research and disseminate evidence based practice standards for clinical simulation methods and learning environments,” says Dr. Aebersold. INACSL has more than 1500 members representing nearly 20 countries.
Senior honors program student Jessica Schultz and her faculty advisor, Assistant Professor Annie Kao Ph.D., FNP-BC, are the winners of UMSN’s 2013 Outstanding Senior Honors Student Paper/Poster. The award, selected by faculty, is based on criteria including significance, results, and presentation. Schultz and Dr. Kao’s paper, "Parenting Style and Practice within the Cultural Context," was described by faculty as impressive, publishable, and the quality of a graduate student product. Pictures from Senior Honors Poster Day can be found on UMSN’s Facebook page.
The first cohort of students in UMSN’s new online Clinical Research Management Certificate Program is enrolling now. The graduate-level program is designed to produce leading research managers and coordinators. The four-course program can be completed online in less than a year and prepares students to conduct clinical research studies, both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored. The first course begins on July 1, 2013.
