UMSN receives grant to increase study abroad opportunities

The University of Michigan School of Nursing is a recipient of a 2017 Capacity Building Grant for U.S. Undergraduate Study Abroad from the U.S. Department of State and Partners of the Americas. Each of the 11 winning institutions will be awarded up to $42,000 to increase and diversify participation in study abroad.

A previous grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education supported undergraduate language learning opportunities such as HS 300: Spanish for Healthcare Professionals. It includes a classroom component and opportunity to study abroad in Mexico.Capacity Building Grants ensure that U.S. institutions are able to: 1) provide students with opportunities to gain global knowledge and skills through a study abroad opportunity; 2) increase the overall number and diversity of student participation in study abroad; 3) establish and maintain strong international partnerships; and 4) diversify the fields of study and the destinations where students are studying and/or interning for academic credit.

The grant will be used on the UMSN project “Capacity Building for Faculty-led Undergraduate Nursing Study Abroad." Nursing students are underrepresented in study abroad nationally and at U-M. Accordingly, this grant will support faculty professional development and program implementation costs to increase faculty-led study abroad opportunities for undergraduate nursing students. Building on existing partnerships in Asia, Africa and Latin America, this project will diversify both the destinations and fields of international education at U-M.

This is the second round of support from the U.S. Department of State, totaling over $1.2 million in grant funding to 29 U.S. institutions of higher education throughout the nation.
