Professors Jody Lori and Carol Boyd to Evaluate Maternity Waiting Homes in Liberia
Jul 07, 2011Project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development to Africare hopes to reduce maternal mortality.
School of Nursing professors Jody Lori and Carol Boyd will soon embark on a trip to Liberia to help explore effective methods of reducing maternal mortality through maternity waiting homes. Several of these homes are under construction, and the goal is, through their improved accessibility to rural parts of the country, to have more mothers give birth with the aid of a professional nurse or nurse-midwife. Students Return from Ghana with Wealth of Community Health Knowledge
Jul 06, 2011Thirteen Michigan students spent two weeks working in clinics, meeting with health officials, and discovering the culture.
After spending two weeks immersed in community health in Ghana, Professor Norma Sarkar and the thirteen Michigan students she accompanied on the trip have returned safely and with a new perspective.

Graduate Student Receives Prestigious APNA Scholarship
Jul 01, 2011The School of Nursing congratulates post-baccalaureate PhD student Amanda Krohn on being selected to receive a 2011 American Psychiatric Nurses’ Association (APNA) Janssen Student Scholarship. The award recognizes outstanding graduate and undergraduate nursing students who have expressed a passion for psychiatric mental health nursing and who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and clinical performance. The scholarship program serves as an effort to help foster the professional development of these students within the psychiatric nursing field.

School of Nursing Mourns Passing of Accomplished Nursing Educator and Scholar Lois W. Gage
Jun 29, 2011Michigan Pioneer and nursing leader developed primary care program and co-chaired the Academic Women's Caucus.
The School of Nursing was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lois W. Gage, Professor Emeritus of Nursing from May 31, 1991 until her death on June 28, 2011. Dr. Gage was a pioneer for women and in nursing practice, and made innumerable contributions to the Michigan academic nursing community.
A native of Massachusetts, Professor Gage completed a diploma in nursing at St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1943. She received her B... Read more

An article co-authored by Drs. Bea Kalisch, Dana Tschannen, and Christopher Friese of the School of Nursing, along with Dr. Hyunhwa Lee of the National Institute of Nursing Research for the NIH, has been published online on the website of the American Journal of Medical Quality, and will be published in a forthcoming print issue of the journal as well. Dr. Luther Christman, Nursing Pioneer, Passes Away at 96
Jun 16, 2011He devoted his career to promoting the importance of nursing and ensuring that nurses gain both the education and the respect they deserve.
The University of Michigan School of Nursing was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Luther Christman, a pioneer in the field of nursing who advocated for higher salaries for nursing, sought racial equality in the nursing field, and became the first male dean of a School of Nursing. Masters Student Vanessa Hoyos Selected for Fellowship Award from U-M International Institute
Jun 09, 2011Award provides funds for students to pursue interests in international affairs.
The University of Michigan International Institute has just recently announced that it has awarded almost $170,000 through its Individual Fellowship program, divided among 47 University students. Among those students is School of Nursing Masters student Vanessa Hoyos, who was awarded a fellowship to do work in Chile examining the determinants of adolescent obesity. The fellowship awards are merit-based and very competitive.
