Alumna Appointed to be Director of Nursing within Bureau of Health Professions

Dr. Villarruel's "Cuidate!" Gets National Praise
Jun 22, 2010Dr. Antonia Villarruel's “Cuidate!” (or "Take Care of Yourself!") curriculum to reduce HIV/AIDS risk behaviors in adolescent Latinos was featured in the June 2010 News and Notes from the National Institute of Nursing Research. Her intervention was recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as one of twenty-eight U.S. programs deemed most effective at preventing teenage pregnancy.
Undergrad Student Recognized for Good Deed
Jun 21, 2010Senior undergraduate student, Samantha Maskell, was featured in the Jackson Citizen Patriot newspaper for stopping to assist a fellow runner in the Rose Run 5K when he fell during the race and couldn’t get back up. She was later presented with an award for her action by race director Brian Olsen.
Regents Approve DNP Program
Jun 17, 2010On Thursday, June 17, the University of Michigan Regents approved the School of Nursing’s request to establish a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduate program. The program will be designed for advanced practice nurses who already hold a Master’s degree in nursing and has been developed in accordance with national standards and criteria established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Alumna Recognized by President Obama
Jun 17, 2010University of Michigan School of Nursing alumna, Jo Eleanor Elliot who earned her BSN in 1947, was recognized by President Obama during his address to the American Nurses Association (ANA). "Nurses are the beating heart of our health care system," the president commented. "It is because you know the system so well that you have become such fierce advocates for reform," he noted as he thanked the nurses and the ANA for their staunch support during the health care debate. Doctoral Student Receives National Research Service Award
Jun 14, 2010Roxane Chan, a doctoral student, received a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). Dr. Janet Larson serving as Ms. Chan's faculty sponsor, her grant is entitled, “Mindfulness Meditation Intervention in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).”
Dr. Katapodi Receives Excellence in Writing Award
Jun 12, 2010Dr. Maria Katapodi has received the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Publishing Division’s Excellence in Writing Award for Quantitative Nursing Research. The award recognizes her article, “Underestimation of Breast Cancer Risk: Influence on Screening Behavior,” published in the ONS journal, Oncology Nursing Forum, as an outstanding scholarly presentation in the area of quantitative nursing research.
