Students Experience Nursing Through Work in Ghana
Follow their blog to see how they are helping the people of Ghana and how their experiences affect their own global perspectives.
Thirteen nursing students, predominantly from the University of Michigan, have endeavored on a summer trip to Ghana, promoting health initiatives and experiencing the nursing profession through work in a less developed country. Leading them along the way are two University of Michigan faculty members: Norma Sarkar, a School of Nursing lecturer, and Kofi Gyan, program manager for all of the University’s health initiatives in Ghana. The trip is part of the Community Health Nursing (N422) and Perspectives in Global Health (N421) classes, giving students an opportunity to compare and contrast the health system in Ghana and the United States.
The group is keeping a detailed blog describing their experiences and the work they are doing. A recent post describes a trip to a primary school, where the American nursing students taught the children about such topics and the importance of hand-washing. It was the first time any American students had visited the school, and both the teachers and students were effusively grateful.
