The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for strategic planning and oversight of key support services within the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN). These areas include Admissions and Records, Communications and Marketing, Technology Services, Finance, Human Resources, Project Management and Digital Education Services, Faculty Support and Facilities Management. Working with the UMSN leadership team, the Chief Operating Officer plans and implements support for the academic, research, practice and service missions of the School.

Angela Cao, who has served as the School’s director of major gifts and campaign oversees all aspects of development, including campaign planning, annual giving, major and planned gift and stewardship related to gifts. Cao has extensive experience as a development professional with 23 years of experience fundraising in the non-profit and higher education sectors. Most recently, in her role with the U-M School of Nursing Cao has been preparing for the upcoming university-wide fundraising campaign that is set to kick off in 2024.

The Office of Health Equity and Inclusion provides organizational leadership in a continuous process of weaving diversity, equity and inclusion priorities throughout the academic, co-curricular and administrative functions of the UMSN. It also works to engage students, faculty, staff and alumni in DEI initiatives which, by design, strengthen our efforts to recruit and support groups underrepresented in nursing and higher education, while bolstering and harnessing the generative potential of diversity throughout our programs. The Office of Health Equity and Inclusion also serves as a resource to individual students, faculty and staff and support their efforts to meet their academic, professional and personal goals.

The Office of Admissions and Records provides a comprehensive set of services to support prospective and incoming students, as well as faculty and staff. The admissions team engages prospective students during the recruitment process and provides assistance to applicants throughout the admissions process. Every year, this team recruits and yields a class of academically talented, diverse, and dynamic students to UMSN’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The records team ensures the accuracy and integrity of the academic records for UMSN. Working collaboratively across the school, this team provides a multitude of services, including course and classroom scheduling, enrollment management and fulfilling data requests for a myriad of purposes.

The U-M School of Nursing’s office of communications and marketing works to advance the mission of the school by sharing and promoting its core values through strategic marketing channels. Together with its students, faculty, alumni and staff, the marketing and communications team creates content for distribution across multiple mediums, including digital, print and physical spaces.

Facilities staff are responsible for ensuring that the condition of the school’s physical environment meets the needs of students, faculty and staff. The faculty support team provides administrative assistance to faculty members in their academic endeavors and includes exam proctoring services for students with approved testing accommodations.
Financial Transactions and Procurement

The Office of Financial Transactions and Procurement provides support in key functional areas including financial transactions, procurement, expense reporting and post-award management for sponsored research projects. Working with unit leadership, the finance team is responsible for monitoring financial transactions throughout the fiscal cycle and facilitating procurement negotiations and contracts. The team manages expense reimbursements and provides training for the expense reporting system. The post-award staff provide faculty and students with timely and quality support for the management of internally and externally funded sponsored research, research training grants, and educational grants and contracts.

The Office of Budget Planning and Financial Analysis provides support for business analysis, departmental and school-level budget administration, and student financial aid, and business analysis. Working with unit leadership, this team is responsible for performing financial analysis used for operational and strategic planning implementation, developing the annual School of Nursing and departmental budgets and managing faculty-held accounts. Additionally, the team coordinates student financial support and scholarship distributions for the School of Nursing.
Grants and Research Office

The Grants and Research Office (GRO) provides faculty and students with timely and quality support for pre-award work. Services include the preparation, organization, and submission of internally and externally funded sponsored research, research training grants, and educational grants and contracts. The support provided extends to assistance for seeking funding opportunities, writing and editing grant text, compliance, regulatory environments, budget development, and the submission process for grants and contracts.
Human Resource Management Office

The Office of Human Resources provides overall policy direction on human resource management issues for the School of Nursing. The office provides human resources services such as recruitment and hiring, onboarding and orientation, performance evaluation cycle and annual appraisals, employee and labor relations, and compensation and compliance. The office is responsible for supporting the school and university guidelines and procedures. The human resources team is available to all of U-M School of Nursing employees to answer any questions.
Project Management Office

The Project Management Office (PMO) provides project management and business analysis services for school-wide projects and key initiatives.
Some of these projects and initiatives include the development of data dashboards, systems and tools for tracking data and managing processes, and providing financial analysis to support the leadership’s operational and strategic decision making.
This office’s scope further includes special projects that fulfill routine provost and other internal and external requirements, such as the annual budget, U.S. News and World Report rankings, and preparation for accreditation. The PMO will work with subject matter experts within UMSN to develop project scope, define needs, and manage project tasks through completion of deliverables, and will interact with information technology, as necessary, to complete a variety of software development projects.

U-M School of Nursing IT provides a wide range of services for the school’s community of students, faculty, staff and guests, and serves as the first point of contact for issues related to technology use within the school. The services they offer include hardware and software consulting, procurement, deployment and troubleshooting. The team also manages the school’s networks and its classrooms and collaboration space technology. Additionally, the office serves as technology liaisons and partners for the School of Nursing community when working with other IT providers such as ITS and H.I.T.S at Michigan Medicine.
