Ellen Lavoie Smith Selected As a K Scholar Through MICHR K Program

Will use award to expand knowledge in genetics and pain physiology, as well as to conduct a research study on the central nervous system.

Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing Ellen Lavoie Smith has been named a K Scholar in the MICHR K Program. This selection is a two-year award designed to provide time for increased focus on clinical research.

The award provides salary support, pilot funds for research, and funds to support any additional training, like coursework or mentored training. Dr. Smith hopes to use these funds to expand her knowledge of genetics, pharmacogenetics, and pain physiology. She also intends to “conduct a prospective, predictive research study exploring central nervous system predictors of painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy experienced by patients receiving taxane/platinum-based chemotherapy.”

The K Scholar award is supported by MICHR and the University’s NIH-Funded Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA), as well as the School of Nursing.
