SN Graduate Student Named Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar
The School of Nursing congratulates Ronald J. Piscotty, Jr., for this distinguished recognition.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has selected UM School of Nursing doctoral candidate Ronald J. Piscotty, Jr., as a Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar. Piscotty joins four other nursing graduate students from around the country in receiving this prestigious honor.
The AACN-administered scholarship program seeks to address the nation’s nursing faculty shortage and to enhance diversity among nurse educators by providing financial support, mentoring and leadership development to graduate students from minority backgrounds who aspire to teach in schools of nursing. The program is funded by the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future.
As a Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar, Piscotty will be expected to meet regularly with his mentor, Dr. Beatrice Kalisch. In addition, he will complete semiannual progress reports and attend an AACN Faculty Development Conference in February 2012. After graduation, Piscotty will serve as full-time faculty at a nursing school in a Registered Nursing program in the United States for a minimum of one year for every year scholarship monies are awarded.
Piscotty’s area of research is focused on the impacts of health care information technology on nursing practice. Specifically, he is examining the relationship of electronic nursing care reminders and missed nursing care. “I have always enjoyed teaching and research,” said Piscotty. “I feel these are two noble ways to contribute and give back to my profession.”
