U-M Nursing Alumnus Elected President of American Academy of Nursing

Dr. Joanne Disch will begin serving as president of AAN in November 2011

Dr. Joanne DischThe U-M School of Nursing congratulates doctoral graduate Dr. Joanne Disch on her election as president of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).  The two-year term begins in November 2011. As president, Disch will lead the Board of Directors, the body governing the Academy and its 1,500 members, or Fellows. The aim of AAN is to serve the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge.

Disch received her PhD from U-M in 1985, and currently serves as a clinical professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. At this institution, she also serves as the Katherine R. and C. Walton Lillehei Chair in Nursing Leadership, chair of the Population Health and Systems Cooperative Unit, and the director of the Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership. Her research interests include environment of care, care delivery modeling, and faculty retention, and her teaching expertise focuses on leadership and management.
