Education beyond the classroom is explored in a new UMSN video and when a faculty member takes the stage for a TEDxUofM talk; plus, registration is now open for Dean’s Research Day.
University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) Clinical Assistant Professor Michelle Aebersold, Ph.D., RN, has been selected as a presenter for TEDxUofM 2014. This year’s theme, Against the Grain, places emphasis on redefining traditional distinctions and exploring that which was previously unknown. Dr. Aebersold, a nationally recognized expert in simulation research and education, will present “One Patient… So Many Lives.” TED (which stands for Technology/ Entertainment/ Design) talks are a means of sparking new discussions on innovative ideas, research, and policies through creative presentations. TEDxUofM 2014 will be March 15 at the Power Center, time TBD. Learn more about simulation in nursing education at UMSN, headquartered at the Clinical Learning Center.
--“Learning on the Edge of Discovery” is the theme of a new UMSN video commissioned by Dean Potempa. Faculty and students share their thoughts on education that goes beyond the classroom. Research, practice, and educational experiences are connected as the core pillars in UMSN’s mission to improve health and health care delivery.
--Registration is open for UMSN’s 2014 Dean's Research Day and Brouse Lecture, which will include presentations from faculty, students and clinicians about the results of ongoing and completed research. Associate Professor Barbara L. Brush, Ph.D., ANP-BC, FAAN, will deliver the 2014 Brouse Lecture entitled Nursing and Population Health: Opportunities and Challenges for the 21st Century. Following the Brouse Lecture, Dr. Brush will be installed as the Carol J. and F. Edward Lake Term Clinical Professor of Nursing in Population Health.
Accolades
--Clinical Associate Professor Esther H. Bay, Ph.D., ACNS-BC, and associates will present "Mentoring the next generation of neuroscience nurses: Implementation findings of an academic-service partnership involving neuroscience nurses with case exemplars" at the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses' Annual Educational Meeting in Anaheim in March. A poster on "Mindfulness-based group therapy versus healthy living intervention: A pilot RCT intervention" will be presented March 21 at the 10th World Congress of the International Brain Injury Association in San Francisco.
--Three UMSN Midwifery students received scholarships to attend the American College of Nurse Midwives Annual Meeting. In May, Jennifer Eifler, Minna Navvab, and Caitlin Couture will travel to Denver for the conference. The conference is an opportunity for midwives and students to learn about the latest evidence-based research, share experiences, and acknowledge the contributions of midwives in advancing maternity and women's health care.
--Assistant Professor Sarah A. Stoddard, Ph.D., CPNP, has been selected as a Fellow in the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM). The title is granted to individuals who demonstrate a long-standing commitment to the welfare of adolescents and a willingness to advocate on their behalf at a local, regional, national or international level. Dr. Stoddard will be honored in March during the 2014 SAHM Annual Meeting in Austin.
