UMSN Faculty, Students and Alumni Make Strong Showing at Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference

Michigan nurses win awards in several categories, on expansive range of research topics.

More than 1,000 nursing scientists participated in the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s 38th Annual Research Conference on the last weekend of March 2014. Participants included students, faculty, practitioners, and leaders froRon Piscotty, Laura Gultekin, An-Yun Yeh, Lenette Jones, Boqin Xiem universities and other organizations. University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) was well represented through faculty, students and alumni.
 
The focus of the four-day event, held in St. Louis, Missouri, was dedicated to “Building Value Based Partnerships through Nursing Science.” The proceedings included workshops, presentations, and poster discussion sessions for participants to learn about bDr. Jessie Cassida, Kristen Choi, Emily Mancewicz, Robert Knoerl, Jordan Harrisonuilding partnerships that improve patient outcomes, global health, and the sharing information among inter-professional enterprises.
 
“MNRS has a longstanding history of supporting research of nursing faculty and students,” says UMSN Professor Susan J. Pressler, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FAHA, director of the Ph.D. program. “It is rewarding to know that many of our students participated at MNRS this year. In addition to the annual scientific meeting, MNRS offers grants to fund dissertation research and research conducted by early career investigators.”
 
Congratulations to all participants from UMSN, including:
  • Assistant Professor Ellen Lavoie Smith, Ph.D., ANP-BC, AOCN, on being selected for the Harriet Werley New Investigator Award. The award recognizes the contribution of a new investigator who has conducted nursing research that has the potential to enhance the science and practice of nursing.
  • Associate Professor Cynthia Arslanian-Engoren, Ph.D., RN, ACNS-BC, FAHA, FAAN, on her selection as the 2014 Senior Nurse Researcher award from the MNRS Decision Making Research Section.
  • Alumna Denise Cooper, DNP, ANP-BC, took first place in the DNP student poster competition which included more than 40 entries. Her poster, Urinary Tract Infections in Long-Term Care:  An Implementation Project to Reduce Inappropriate Antibiotic Treatment, presented the results from her scholarly project. 
Denise Cooper, Carman Turkelson, Michelle WhalenCooper’s win makes it two years in a row for UMSN in the DNP student poster competition. Last year, alumna Corinne Lee was the winner. “This is quite an accomplishment,” says UMSN Professor and Director of the DNP program Richard W. Redman. “Our DNP students are setting a high standard in this prestigious nursing society.”
