UMHS/UMSN Poster Event Showcases Clinical Innovation, Evidence-Based Practice and Research in Nursing
The posters highlight many of the collaborations between clinicians, faculty, and students that are improving patient care.
A record 46 posters were submitted for the 2014 sixth-annual University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) Nursing Poster Day. “Looking at the work here proves how our nursing community, despite competing priorities, is dedicated to continuing to improve the lives of patients, their families, and all staff,” said UMHS Chief Nursing Officer Marge Calarco, PhD, RN, in her remarks before announcing the awards. “This work demonstrates ongoing collaborations with our nursing faculty and students and others on research and evidence-based work which influences patient care not only here at UMHS, but across the country and the world,” she told the UMHS nurses.
The posters were on display for two days in the Towsley Center Lobby for visitors to learn about the various efforts of practicing nurses and researchers to advance health care. A wide variety of topics show the extended reach of nursing’s role in patient care and health system operations. Pain management, reducing infections and pressure ulcers, anesthesia delivery for children, and hospital staffing organization are just a few of the important areas of focus.
Award recipients in four categories were selected. University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) Clinical Assistant Professor Deborah M. Price, DNP, MS, RN, is a co-author on the winning Clinical Innovation poster and credits nursing students for their efforts in the work. "The senior-class nursing students provided support for the 8D Mobility Initiative by presenting a summary of evidence-based literature to the 8D multidisciplinary staff that highlighted the importance of mobilizing patients to promote patient health and recovery,” says Dr. Price. “Additionally, they collected patient mobility data pre and post initiative to evaluate the effectiveness of the change in practice on the unit."
