UMSN faculty and students receive Honors, present research at Midwest Nursing Research Society conference
The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) was well represented at one of the largest nursing conferences in the region. The Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) has more than 1,300 members from 13 states. The annual MNRS conference is an opportunity for UMSN faculty and students to showcase their work and form new research collaborations.
Janean Holden, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, the Barbara A. Therrien Collegiate Professor of Nursing and UMSN Associate Dean for Research and Rackham Graduate Studies is president of the organization and believes that MRNS is the strongest regional nursing research society in the United States.
“MNRS is an excellent organization that promotes nursing science, has good networking, and is highly supportive of students,” says Dr. Holden.
Awards
Assistant Professor Deena Kelly Costa, Ph.D., RN, received the Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award for her research on ICU organizational approaches with a specific focus on interprofessional teams. The selection committee credits Costa’s work with documenting the significant role of critical care nurses and the benefits of nurse practitioners and physician assistants as part of the team, as well as generating a unique measurement of interprofessional care.
The committee stated, “her research impacts patients and clinicians as she advocates for providing the best organization to optimize the ICU team’s ability to deliver the highest quality ICU care.”
UMSN Clinical Associate Professor Dana Tschannen, Ph.D., RN, received the Distinguished Scholar Award for the Health Systems, Policy and Informatics Research Interest Group. The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to systems, policy and/or informatics on a regional and national level.
This is the second year in a row a UMSN faculty member received the Distinguished Scholar Award. Clinical Associate Professor Michelle Aebersold, Ph.D., RN, CHSE, FAAN, was the 2016 honoree for her work “advancing the science of learning applied in simulation to align clinician and student practice behaviors with research evidence to improve learner and health outcomes. Aebersold led a workshop on simulation-based research during this year’s conference.
Presentations
Many of this year’s posters and paper presentations showcased opportunities at UMSN for students to collaborate with faculty on significant research projects. The presentations covered a wide array of focus areas including implementation science, women’s health, policy, health systems, and informatics.
