Faculty and alumni selected as 2017 AAN Fellows, honored as Living Legend

The American Academy of Nursing recently announced its 2017 class of Academy Fellows. Of the 173 distinguished nurses selected, two are faculty at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) and two are UMSN alumnae.

Fellows are selected based on their significant contributions to nursing and health care, and in particular how their career has influenced health care policies. The inductees will be honored at a ceremony during the Academy’s annual policy conference to be held on October 5-7, 2017 in Washington, D.C.

  • Stephen Strobbe, Ph.D., RN, PMHCNS-BC, CARN-AP, FIAAN is a board-certified psychiatric and addictions nurse and currently serves as the president of the International Nurses Society on Additions. He received the Golden Apple award in 2015, the University of Michigan’s only student-nominated and student-selected teaching award. He is also currently a Fulbright fellow in Brazil.
  • Patricia Hurn, Ph.D., RN is dean and professor of UMSN. She is internationally known for her work in understanding the cellular and molecular basis of gender difference in response to experimental brain injury. She directs an interdisciplinary research laboratory that conducts biomedical research and applies findings to point-of-care patient applications. In 2014 she was awarded the Thomas Willis Award for Basic Science by the American Stroke Association/American Heart Association.
  • Alumna Anne W. Snowdon Ph.D., MSc, BScN, (Ph.D. 2000) is professor at the University of Windsor, Canada, and academic chair of the World Health Innovation Network. She is also scientific director and CEO of SCAN Health, a network of Centers of Excellence International Knowledge Translation Platform located in the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor. She works to build collaborative global partnerships to advance innovation and scalability of innovation across health systems, providing support for innovators and entrepreneurs to bring their discoveries to market.
  • Alumna Elizabeth A. Schlenk, Ph.D., RN, is associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Her research focuses on chronic disorder regimens and she collaborates across disciplines to study such diseases as diabetes, hypertension, Raynaud’s disease, fibromyalgia syndrome, and arthritis.

In addition to the new fellows, UMSN alumna Linda Cronenwett, Ph.D., RN, FAAN was named a Living Legend. This is the AAN's highest honor.
