Alum Stephanie Colton wins 2021 Nursing at Michigan Poster Day Award
New U-M School of Nursing graduate Stephanie Colton (DNP ’21), RN, AGACNP-BC, has been recognized as the winner of the U-M School of Nursing Poster Award at the 2021 Nursing at Michigan Poster Day for her project, “Reduction of Pain in an Adult In-Patient Medicine Unit: Movement is Medicine Pilot.”
Held virtually May 3 and 4, Nursing at Michigan Poster Day provides an opportunity for all nurses at Michigan Medicine to showcase research, clinical innovations and evidence-based practice work. The event is serves as a celebration of work accomplished across the nursing community and an opportunity for networking with colleagues. More than 35 posters were presented during the event, which also included live webinars on select topics.
Colton’s project used the Movement is Medicine pilot on an adult inpatient medical unit at Michigan Medicine to examine how the implementation of movement as a nonpharmacological treatment modality can allow for greater reduction in pain compared to opioid administration alone. The project explores the theory that increasing movement in the adult inpatient medical-surgical population will decrease their pain, decrease the unit’s opioid consumption and improve secondary outcomes such as falls and pressure ulcers. To date, the ongoing project has shown a decrease in patients’ pain and opioid consumption.
Top poster awards were presented in six categories. Colton’s U-M School of Nursing award comes with a $250 donation to be used for educational or professional development purposes.
