University of Michigan School of Nursing professor appointed to federal accountability office
Sep 24, 2018ANN ARBOR, MI – The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) appointed Christopher Friese, Ph.D., RN, AOCN®, FAAN, to serve as a member of the Governing Board of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
GAO is an independent, nonpartisan agency that investigates how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars. It oversees the appointment of half a dozen health care advisory committees, including PCORI’s governing board.

Sep 14, 2018The first day of clinicals is one of the most anticipated events for nursing students, but it didn’t go well for Olivia Livernois.
“I fainted, right there on the floor, and ended up in the emergency room all day,” said Livernois, now a University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) junior.

PR: I make sure all the operations for the undergrad program go as smoothly as possible. Staffing, clinical placements, undergrad faculty, there’s a lot. I really enjoy helping faculty be good mentors to their students and successful in their roles.

Entering DNP student focuses on populations to affect health policy
Aug 26, 2018Most doctor of nursing practice (DNP) students have spent some time working as RNs before they return to school for a terminal degree. Laurel Machiele is instead entering the DNP program fresh from graduating with her bachelor’s of science in nursing from Calvin College this past spring.

Aug 10, 2018The Alumni Society Board of Governors of the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) and UMSN have selected Helen Erickson, Ph.D., RN, AHN-BC, FAAN (BSN ’74, MS ’76), as the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award winner.
Her long career in clinical practice and nursing education has provided a number of important contributions to the field. Chief among these contributions has been developing a theory and practice of holistic nursing.
Erickson will accept her award and make remarks at the UMSN annual homecoming reunion luncheon on October 5, 2018.

Finding hope for people with COPD through exercise
Jul 30, 2018Difficulty breathing, coughing, mucus and wheezing are the key symptoms that make daily activities difficult for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In addition, people with COPD are at increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and other conditions.
While there is no cure for the disease, University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) researchers are finding ways to ease the strife that comes with COPD, especially when it’s coupled with sedentary behavior and chronic conditions that tend to increase as people age.
