Puerto Rican pride: Ties to cultural home encourage UMSN student to give back, and stay strong
Mar 07, 2018Nathaniel Mercado had just begun his first year at the University of Michigan School of Nursing when Hurricane Maria hit his family’s homeland, Puerto Rico, on September 20, 2017. Maria was one of the most destructive storms the island has ever seen.
He had been visiting family the month before, and returned stateside in September to begin his freshman year at UMSN.

Training school nurses to reverse opioid overdoses
Mar 02, 2018“How many of you have seen an overdose?”
In a room filled with two dozen Washtenaw County school nurses, about a quarter of them raised a hand. They work in elementary, middle and high schools throughout the county and some of the overdoses had occurred at their schools.
The nurses had gathered for a training session on how to recognize and reverse opioid overdoses. It was led by Gina Dahlem, Ph.D., FNP-C, FAANP, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Mar 01, 2018In the home stretch of her third and final year in the Nurse Midwifery MSN program, Alisha Marchand is excited to provide the kind of care she sees as lacking in her local area.
A labor and delivery nurse for Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital in Monroe, Michigan (pop. 26,470), she has seen the effect of America’s opioid epidemic on expectant mothers in her community.
“We used to see three overdoses a night in the community. It has gotten better lately, but we still have mothers come in who have been using heroin or Percocet,” Marchand explained.

Feb 22, 2018Dana Tschannen was an early-career nurse working in an intensive care unit (ICU) when she found she had a hard time leaving work at work.
“I would consistently come home from a shift and wonder if we should have handled a situation differently, or if we really did the right thing for a particular patient,” she explained. “In an ICU, you see a lot of disparity, hardships and complexity. I started to consider ways we could be more effective in providing optimal care for our patients and families. I became focused on thinking about systems and quality improvement.”

Feb 15, 2018Clare Donohoe was 16 years old when her young niece, Leah, was diagnosed with a rare subtype of acute myeloid leukemia. Leah went through months of treatment at a hospital in Washington, D.C., but still needed a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a match in the family or on the national registry. Leah's care team told the family there weren't many promising options beyond waiting for a match.

Feb 05, 2018Almost as a rule, nursing students are busy people with demanding course loads. Nonetheless, many at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) find ways to get involved in activities outside of their classes.
Art and nursing, a perfect matchKaylee Yang, a freshman from Canton, Michigan, was drawn to nursing as a way to find satisfaction in a career.
