  • Nurse anesthesia
  • Opioid epidemic
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion

Karen Holman is assistant chief nurse anesthetist. She is interested in the education and training of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists that are training to be the future leaders in anesthesia. She is hoping to begin a program to familiarize high school students with the art of nurse anesthesia and spark an early interest in the field. She also hopes to become much more involved in the current opioid epidemic and provide education on how to identify those that are high risk or showing signs of substance use. She also gives presentations to educate staff on diversity, equity and inclusion, something Michigan Medicine has identified as high priority.

Teaching

Homan has participated in educating her peers and the public since the beginning of her nursing career in 1995. She led a fire safety program that included all elementary students in the Howell Public School district in 1998, as well as being a substitute teacher for the Howell Public School System.  She provides 3rd and 4th grade students at a local elementary school each year to learn about anesthesia and what to expect when coming into the hospital for a procedure. She is a clinical instructor at University of Michigan Mott Hospital as well as McLaren Hospital of Lansing for Nurse Anesthesia students. Karen provides education for the OR RN orientees on hypothermia in the OR and general anesthesia education. Her hope is to start educational programs locally for elementary students on  visits to the OR as well as high school students on Nurse Anesthesia education.
