Health equity faculty hiring initiative
The U-M School of Nursing is interested in building on the health equity work that has been evolving in the School for decades. Many of our faculty have partnered with colleagues from other disciplines and communities throughout Michigan, the nation and the world to address inequalities in health care delivery, health outcomes, and community/environmental factors that contribute to health outcomes. It is our desire to continue to grow and develop sustainable, transdisciplinary work that exerts a strong impact in our world. To that end, we are looking for more faculty with expertise in health equity and anti-racism and social justice methodologies. This growing cohort of faculty will be part of a developing infrastructure that will facilitate scalability to use these new and important tools and to engage additional experts across campus and surrounding communities. The U-M School of Nursing is part of a team of Schools at the University that includes the School of Information, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health and the School of Medicine’s Department of Learning Health Sciences that was submitted and awarded funding for a cluster hire around anti-racism and social justice. A mid-to-senior-level position in the School of Nursing will be filled from this funding. In addition, there is an active search committee in place for additional faculty hires from all ranks and disciplines around health equity, anti-racism and social justice.
Some of the areas of interest are listed below, but these are not exhaustive.
- Racial bias and unintended racist consequences in data, algorithms, and technologies that enable health care;
- Point-of-care interventions to reduce healthcare providers’ implicit racial biases and enhance their structural competence;
- Point of care interventions to improve health equity including systems level interventions; and
- Community-driven, technology-enabled models of healthcare delivery that address racism as a social determinant of health
Faculty have an opportunity to be engaged in and help promote strategic directions with our newly created Office of Health Equity and Inclusion under the leadership of our Chief Officer, Dr. Rushika Patel. The Office supports a diversity of community-led, participatory initiatives that shape our culture for equity and inclusion. Current strategic priorities include creating dynamic curricular and co-curricular health equity learning and leadership opportunities and promoting excellence in inclusive teaching across the U-M School of Nursing.
