A message from U-M School of Nursing academic program leadership

Jun 03, 2020

Dear U-M School of Nursing students,

Many of you are deeply impacted by the recent killings of African Americans and the sense of pain and powerlessness that is being expressed across the country. This is happening as we also see increasing racial disparities in health and an anti-Asian racism that has only been exacerbated since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The summer and virtual learning environment make it challenging for us to connect with one another on campus. We invite all of you to attend a community conversation this Thursday in the... Read more

A message from Dean Patricia Hurn

Jun 02, 2020

COVID-19 has consumed so much of our lives these last months, claiming our attention, emotions and time. I ask that you pause and look hard at the unbelievably horrible events in Minnesota and the killing of yet another African American man, George Floyd. This new horror follows hard on the heels of escalating violence around the United States against men and women of color over the last months.

We have to increase our vigilance, stop repeating history and never accept this as just part of our lives, as the new normal.

Please join me in supporting our School of... Read more

Up to 60% of students in some schools vaped in past month

May 27, 2020

Vaping is most heavily concentrated in U.S. schools with a higher proportion of white students, schools in the South and West, and schools where more students smoke cigarettes, a new University of Michigan study shows.

Overall, more than one in 10 American middle and high school students report having used e-cigarettes within the last month. In certain schools, as many as 60% of students said they vaped during that time.

It’s useful to look at vaping prevalence at both the individual and school levels, because each uses different variables, said study author Sean Esteban McCabe... Read more

SOCR Lab researchers re-purpose SOCR Web-based BrainViewer to render SARS-CoV-2 virus

May 01, 2020

In April 2020, the SOCR Lab researchers repurposed the SOCR Web-based BrainViewer, developed to display multimodal brain data, atlases, and tractography models, to now render SARS-CoV-2 virus (novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 disease). This stereotactic visualization framework allow exploring the 3D structure of the viral capsid and its envelope, as well as illustrate its relation to the host cell topology and cell-receptor sites. Attached are some renditions showing the inside and the outside of the SARS-CoV-2 capsid, and the cell membrane it is penetrating. Researchers can view... Read more
