UMSN reaches major fundraising goal
Jun 01, 2017Ann Arbor, Mich -- The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) is pleased to announce it has reached its $28 million goal in the Victors for Michigan fundraising campaign.
“Donors are recognizing the important work happening at UMSN,” said Colleen Zimmerman, UMSN’s executive director of Development and Alumni Relations. “There’s a growing understanding of nursing science. Patient care will always be a focus area, but there is much more happening with leadership, population health, quality and safety. It’s really exciting.”

Long-time UMSN faculty member creates change through community

Twenty-five years deep at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN), Dr. Patricia Coleman-Burns, or “PCB” as she is affectionately known to students, continues to create community. This year, she has been recognized with the 2017 Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious honor comes from the Office of the Provost and carries a $5,000 purse to continue her work on diversity.

May 10, 2017A history of cyclic vomiting syndrome, skull fractures from a boat accident so severe the driver was killed, and ulcerative colitis, is reason enough that Jaclyn Schaumburger might try to avoid hospitals whenever possible. Instead, she’s pursuing a career in nursing that will allow her to use her health challenges to help others.

May 03, 2017The American Nurses Association designated 2017 as "The Year of the Healthy Nurse." The organization represents more than 3.6 million nurses. It created the initiative to put a focus on nurses to improve their own health and pass that momentum on to their patients and communities.
The theme of this year’s National Nurses Week (May 6-12) is “Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit.” It’s intended to celebrate nurses who lead the charge for health and wellness.

Ironclad bond: UMSN prof and alumna train together for Ironman
May 03, 2017“It’s a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full 26.2 mile marathon,” says April Bigelow, Ph.D., ANP-BC, AGPCNP-BC, a University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) clinical associate professor.
Bigelow is explaining the Ironman race she and alumna Jennifer El Aile are training for together. Both have completed multiple races and triathlons but the October race in Louisville, Ky, will be the biggest challenge yet. A full distance Ironman triathlon, like this one, is widely considered to be one the most difficult endurance events in the world.

May 01, 2017Graduates at the University of Michigan School of Nursing’s (UMSN) Saturday, May 29th convocation ceremony were filled with nervous pride as they filled Hill Auditorium to be recognized for their hard work, newly-earned diplomas, and the change of professional status their graduation brings.

UMSN sophomore wins prestigious Gilman scholarship
May 01, 2017May finds University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) students scattering near and far. One student, Michelle Tuyo, leaves for Uganda immediately after finishing her second year at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Tuyo won a prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, supported by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute for International Education (IIE), which provides funding for her entire experience, making it possible for her to go without taking out additional loans. American Nurses Association endorses position statement on substance use among nurses and nursing students, authored by UMSN professor
May 01, 2017Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) has endorsed a joint position statement from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) and the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA) that encourages a focus on prevention, treatment and recovery for nurses and nursing students with substance use and related disorders, as opposed to punishment.
