Student AwardHillman Scholar Clare Donohoe earned an award from St. Jude Children’s Hospital for her work in the Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) program. Donohoe was the sole nursing student in the summer internship which included nearly 70 students from across the country. Donohue’s project was a retrospective review of patients who underwent a bone marrow transplant and determined how many of them developed mucositis (a debilitating side effect causing open sores and inflammation in the mouth) which leads to increased pain and incidence of infections. Alumni Spotlight: UMSN Alum Rises in Army Ranks to Prestigious Post

Edward Yackel had two goals growing up: He wanted to be a nurse, and he wanted to see the world. A native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he achieved both goals through a military career with stops from Hawaii to Iraq.

The inspiration to be a nurse came when Yackel had surgery as a young child. “I have a vivid memory after getting sick from anesthesia,” he explained. “The nurse let me stand on her feet as she walked backwards from the bathroom back to my bed. Program Spotlight: Filling a Need and Producing Highly Sought Graduates through UMSN’s Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program

“I knew I wanted a more involved role as a health care provider; I was working in a pediatric intensive care unit and loved the science and high acuity of that patient population,” says University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) alumna Rachael Crowe, MSN, RN, CPNP-AC.

She earned her BSN at U-M and decided to further her education, training, and skill set with a master’s degree. “The acute care pediatric nurse practitioner program felt like a perfect fit.”

Midwifery Lecture Brings Touching Full Circle Moment for UMSN Associate Dean

 8th Annual Terri Murtland lectureship and scholarship honor midwifery pioneer. 

It’s been more than 30 years since the University of Michigan Health System launched its Nurse-Midwifery Service. It’s considered a model for programs across the country, and much of the credit for its successful foundation centers on midwife Terri Murtland.

Murtland was widely respected for her clinical skills and her mentorship towards students and novice nurses. She passed away from cancer in 2008 but her role as a mentor made a lasting impression on many people. This year’s lectureship... Read more

U-M Schools of Nursing and Medicine Partner to Expand Care at Free Clinic

The schools will use a new grant to improve interprofessional education and increase care for a local community.

The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) answered the call to accelerate the development of a creative and interprofessional initiative.
