Island view: UMSN senior has a perspective unlike any other and a passion for health care at home and abroad

A tale of two islands

Ten years ago, University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) undergraduate student Rhodene Mullings (senior), immigrated from Jamaica to Mackinac Island, Michigan. One of only two students in her graduating high school class of ten to land at the University of Michigan, Mullings completed a BA in Literature, Sciences, and the Arts (LSA) focusing on anthropology with a minor in medical anthropology.

Yet it was nursing that she had her heart set on as a career, and in April she expects to complete her BSN, with a minor in global nursing.

Six University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) graduate students have received scholarships from the Center for the Education of Women (CEW) this academic year. These competitive scholarships are awarded for academic performance and potential, and are reserved for those who have had an interruption in their education and/or are primary caregivers.

New professorship comes with serendipitous ties and a focus on improving healthcare delivery

When LaRue Hosmer, a professor emeritus at U-M’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business, began planning his estate he had the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) in mind. More than 25 years earlier, he had been a landlord to Dana Richardson when she was a UMSN student. Through that connection, Hosmer built lasting friendships with Richardson and her friend and fellow nurse, UMSN master’s alumna Jenny Stimac. UMSN Ph.D. candidate receives funding to research yoga for bone marrow transplant patients

Mohamad Baydoun, a University of Michigan doctoral candidate, recently won a $5,000 research award from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Foundation. ONS will fund Baydoun’s dissertation research on “Yoga for persistent fatigue in the survivors of bone marrow transplantation (BMT).”

Baydoun has six years of experience as an oncology nurse in a bone marrow transplantation unit. His research addresses fatigue after BMT, a problem that limits activities and causes distress.

Faculty impact: Helping families recover from homelessness

When Laura Gultekin moved to Ann Arbor for a new job at Michigan Medicine’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, she saw how severe gaps in health, known as health disparities, can be among different populations throughout the county. Her nursing career began in a Washington, D.C. pediatric intensive care unit (ICU), which served children from disadvantaged communities.

“We had children coming to the ICU every day with conditions that are normally manageable, like diabetes and asthma,” Gultekin explained. “I thought that was the norm.”

Local senior finds inspiration, builds community while pursuing nursing degree

Zeineb Selmane, senior nursing student at University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) is as local as it gets, despite her tri-citizenship status. Born in Canada to Algerian parents, she moved with her family at age seven to Ann Arbor.

“My family chose Ann Arbor because of the University of Michigan and the school system. I went to high school right down the road, at Huron,” she said. 

“I grew up here. My home is here and this is where I want to be for the long-haul.”
