The annual research conference that the Midwest Research Nursing Conference (MNRS) hosted in Chicago in early March 2013 turned into a "Go Blue" kind of blue-ribbon event. University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) doctoral students won first place in both the Ph.D. and DNP student poster competitions, and two UMSN BSN students also earned honors for their work.

UMSN Student Uses Personal Battle with Melanoma to Inspire Others to Actively “Stay in the Shade”
Mar 07, 2013Karl Lopata was only 25 when he was diagnosed with skin cancer, and got to know nursing from the outside.
Karl Lopata was a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, living in California, when he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2005. “My impression of skin cancer was that it was a simple surgery, but I learned if it’s in an advanced stage, it can be devastating.”

UMSN Remembers Sylvia Sukoff Hacker with Memorial Scholarship Fund
Jan 18, 2013Dr. Hacker leaves a legacy of education on human sexuality and service to her community.
Dr. Hacker, associate professor emeritus at UMSN and the School of Public Health, passed away on January 13, 2013, at the age of 90. Widely known and respected on and far beyond campus for her expertise in sexual education, Dr. Hacker used humor and forthrightness to encourage positive discourse when addressing controversial aspects of human sexuality.

UMSN Student Encourages Others to Apply for Global Clinical Research Summer Program in Africa
Jan 16, 2013Master’s student Belinda Fish spent more than two weeks in Kenya as part of a multidisciplinary team of U-M students.
“It was an experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” said Belinda Fish. A nursing student, Fish was part of a team that included students from U-M schools of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.
