Grad Students Receive U-M Travel Grants

Karen Frank and Janice Bernick, graduate students, were awarded Rackham travel grants to present posters at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. Sarah Bauss, graduate student, also had her poster accepted for presentation. The School of Nursing congratulates these students on their accomplishments and wishes them the best of luck at the conference.

Dr. Manojlovich Receives Funding for Work with VA

Dr. Milisa Manojlovich received funding to expand and enhance systems redesign capability at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. This initiative will build upon a current commitment to Lean principles and through a series of initiatives intended to improve interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork, patient flow, and patient outcomes. A key component in this effort is the creation on a redesigned inpatient service – the “Gold Service” – that could eventually become a national model for how inpatient care should be provided in the 21st century.

Alumna Receives Excellence in Community Health Nursing Award

The Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Michigan (VNA) announced that U-M alumna Kathleen Glover (’92 MS), RN, BSN, MS, CWOCN, ANP-BC, is the recipient of its most prestigious nursing award. On January 19, 2010, Glover received the Sidney E. Chapin Award for Excellence in Community Health Nursing at a ceremony held at VNA headquarters in Oak Park, Michigan.

Dr. Brush Appointed to Robert Wood Johnson Leadership Council

Associate Professor Barbara L. Brush has been selected as a member of the Leadership Council for the Robert Wood Johnson funded initiative Valuing Diversity: An Action Oriented Agenda. Professor Brush joins 27 other senior-level decision makers, who are distinguished in their respective fields, to develop an action agenda which accomplishes the goals of a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Dr. Sampselle Earns Pathfinder Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Carolyn Sampselle, the Carolyne K. Davis Collegiate Professor of Nursing University of Michigan’s School of Nursing, was rewarded the Pathfinder Distinguished Service Award by Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FINR). The award ceremony, which took place on October 1, was held in Washington, D.C. This prestigious award acknowledges nursing scientists and researchers who tirelessly work to increase our collective knowledge of health and health care. Dr. Christopher Friese, assistant research scientist, University of Michigan School of Nursing, was awarded an initial-stage research funding grant through the new National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Nursing Research (NIH-NINR) “Pathway to Independence Award" program.

School Researcher Wins Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant

AkkeNeel Talsma, an assistant professor of nursing business and health systems at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, is one of 15 winners of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's inaugural Nurse Faculty Scholar award.

The three-year, $350,000 grant begins September 1 and will support Talsma's study of operating-room nurses. She will investigate how staffing numbers, training levels and operating-room interruptions contribute to nursing actions that affect patient outcomes.
